Description: Ki Kwanji is a young martial art, barely fifty years old. Unlike other martial arts, which are intended for self-defense or spiritual exercise, this style has sprung up as a sport. There are organized tournaments in Lanna where two men trade kicks and punches until one of them can no longer stand, and this style has grown out of these brutal competitions.
This is an extremely aggressive fighting style, but one with a limited array of moves, which makes it somewhat predictable (although still challenging to face and entertaining for those who enjoy this sort of thing).
Basic Curriculum: Hard Martial Arts, Pugilism
Knacks: Corps-á-Corps, Exploit Weakness (Ki Kwanji), Jab, Kick, Snap Kick
New Swordsman Knack: Kick. A Kick inflicts 0k2 damage, but raises the TN that you are trying to hit by ten. You must declare a Kick before rolling the attack, and use this Knack instead of your normal Attack Knack. This is the same as the Kick Knack found in the Hard Martial Arts Skill, but it is considered a Basic Knack for students of Ki Kwanji.
Revised Swordsman Knack: Snap Kick. A Snap Kick is a counterattack made with no thought to your own defense. It is a quick strike made at an oncoming opponent at the moment when he is attempting to attack you, in the hopes that your kick will stop him from continuing his attack. When an opponent attacks you, you may spend a Held or Current Action (but not an Interrupt Action) to perform a Snap Kick. To do so, roll Wits + Snap Kick as an Attack Roll against the attacking opponent. If you hit, you deal standard Kick Damage (0k2), rolling a number dice equal to your Mastery Level in Ki Kwanji (Brawn is not added to this damage roll). If this causes a Dramatic Wound to your opponent, then the attack he was about to make is canceled without effect. You may declare Raises to increase the damage or to make a Called Shot if you wish.
Apprentice: The Apprentice’s hands strike like lightning. His Attack (Pugilism) and Attack (Martial Arts) are considered to be a single Knack: Attack (Ki Kwanji). The automatic Rank in each Knack provided by the Skills in the Basic Curriculum gives the Apprentice a starting Rank of 2 in this Knack, and it can be raised as any other Basic Knack. In addition, the Apprentice receives a Free Raise to any attack he attempts using Attack (Ki Kwanji) or Jab as his Attack Knack.
Apprentices receive a free Rank in one of their Swordsman Knacks in lieu of membership in the Swordsman’s Guild.
Journeyman: The Journeyman attacks his enemy in preparation, countering the enemy’s attack before it strikes home. He receives one free Rank of the Snap Kick Knack. This can increases a Rank of five in Snap Kick to a Rank of six. If he does not yet have a Snap Kick Rank of five, he may increase it from five to six later by spending 25 XP.
Master: The Master makes low kicks by hopping upward, then kicking downward onto the shin of his opponent. To do so, he makes an ordinary Kick attack, but he may not try to make a Called Shot with this Kick. If he succeeds, the opponent takes an automatic Dramatic Wound.
